AN ANALYSIS OF CODE MIXING USED BY MAIN CHARACTER IN THE "ALL YOU CAN EAT" NOVEL

Sociolinguistics is a study about the relationship between society and language. It aims to get a better understanding of languages in communication. Code mixing is one of the language phenomena that occur nowadays. Code mixing is mixing two languages or more within a sentence. People use code mixing in every occasion either spoken or written communication. The purposes of this study were to find out the kinds of code mixing used by the main character and the reasons of the author in using code mixing in the All You Can Eat novel. This study applied descriptive method because all the data were in the form of word. The instruments of this study were document and interview guideline. The object of this study was All You Can Eat novel by Christian Simamora. Based on the result of this study, it has been found that there are three kinds of code mixing used by main character in the novel. They are insertion, alternation, and congruent lexicalization. Besides, there are some reasons of author in using code mixing. By using code mixing, the author can write anything related to character in the contemporary novel. The author also can communicate in informal situation and find appropriate words or expressions in both Bahasa Indonesia and English. Accordingly, the author's expression, idea, and emotion can be freely exposed in writing novel without worrying about using only one language
